- Producer Notes
- Bin 51 captures many attributes of the Eden Valley locale. The region’s high altitude and cool-climate induces riesling with great finesse and elegance with a capacity for long-term cellaring. South Australia has gained worldwide recognition for producing definitive world-class riesling and Eden Valley always features. In their youth, the wines possess scented floral and citrus aromas, with a mineral edge and marked natural acidity, contributing significantly to the palate texture and flavour. Bin 51 was created in the 1990s as part of the evolving Penfolds white wine development program. The first vintage in 1999 was labelled Eden Valley Reserve Bin Riesling. The evolution of Penfolds Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling opens another chapter in a long history of Penfolds involvement in winemaking from this variety. Bin 51 Eden Valley Riesling is a classic style that has benefitted from years of trial, technical advances and progressive vineyard management.

The growing season was defined by cooler than average days and warmer than average nights, combined with a lack of rain that began in mid-September. Total rainfall, from the start of May 2012 to the start of April 2013 has been 35% down on Long Term Average. A relatively dry, early and quick vintage was experienced in Eden Valley with the Riesling harvest commencing in mid-February. Riesling harvested early retained both natural acidity and great depth of flavour, showing all the hallmarks of a classic year.

Pale straw with lime green hues. Definitive Eden Valley Riesling. Want florals, look no further, spicy jasmine, mandarin blossom and underlying whiffs of French marigold amongst perfumed bath salts and an intriguing wet slate minerality. Let’s not forget the lime zest. Citrus bursts with lime juice aplenty, Fine, long and linear natural acid encompassing the entire length of the palate – talc, slate, mineral – brilliant. One for the ages - classic Australian bone dry Riesling. Classic Eden Valley.

The 2013 Australian vintage was generally very good.
Much of the country had a dry, steady growing season. Regions like Tasmania, Coonawarra and parts of Victora all enjoyed a moderate growing season. However, others, like the Barossa Valley and McLaren V...
