Expert tasting note: "Deep, dark ruby-red, not quite opaque. Dense, dark fruit is overlaid by intense ceadry oak & has earthy touches. Intense dark fruit on the palate has a nice freshness. The wine is medium to full bodied and has brooding black fruit that sits behind a fine cedary structure. Acid and alcohol are both nicely in balance. Oak on the finish is brilliantly handled, being fine but not smothering the fruit. The finish is long & fine, but will need some time to open." - 11/07 DCAMW

- The Grand Vin is the product of exceptional terroirs from the former Léoville estate. These terroirs are located mainly in the Clos Léoville Las Cases, which you pass as you leave Saint- Julien village for Pauillac. They extend over nearly 60ha producing Cabernet Sauvignons and Cabernet Francs with a complex, polished expression and characteristics which are totally unique to the Grand Vin of Léoville du Marquis de Las Cases and have been widely recognized for years.

The growth cycle began with exceptionally hot weather in March and April. In June there was rain during the blossoming, then the summer brought a real heat wave with temperatures sometimes rising above 40°C. The early September rain was then a blessing for the end of the ripening process as the vines were beginning to feel the lack of water.

Kräftiges Rubin. Rauchige Nase, wirkt exotisch, dunkle Frucht, Teer, Kaffee, Kräuter, Eukalyptus, Kalk, mit mehr Luft auch laktische Töne, tanzt in dieser Serie aus der Reihe. Im Gaumen warmfruchtig, wirkt auf mich sehr «new World», irritierend, qualitativ nicht schlecht, nein, im Gegenteil, entwickelt sich mit der Zeit, wird präziser und schlanker, zeigt noch jugendliche Gerbstoffe und eine sehr gute Länge. Jetzt bis 2035+

Showing no signs of heat or overripeness, the wine offers a spicy dark berry, cigar wrapper, wet earth, forest leaf and mint-packed nose. On the palate the wine is round, full-bodied, ripe, and fleshy, but not at all over the top or overripe. The finish remains on the sweet, but fresh fruit side with ample red and black fruits and dusty tannins in the finish. My instincts are to enjoy this now and over the next 12-15 years. The wine blends 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot qnd 13% Cabernet Franc, 13.15% ABV. Picking is one of the estates earliest harvest periods, September 11-26. 93 Points

Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, breiterer Wasserrand. Reifes Weichsel-Kirsch-Konfit, ein Hauch von Schlehen, feine Holzwürze. Saftig, extraktsüß und elegant, schöne Komplexität, sehr rund und harmonisch, reife Herzkirschen im Abgang, bleibt lange haften, ein delikater Nachhall, bereits gut antrinkbar.

This is massive, hugely concentrated, topped with wood and intense tannins. Flavors of bitter chocolate are dominant, heavy fruits, blackberries and texture that fills the mouth with dark, dense flavors. Big in all senses.
