The palate is beautifully together. Tannins are rounded but firm. Good acidity lifts mellowing red fruits & cinnamon spice, giving lovely length. - In 1886, high in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the first Monte Bello vineyards were planted, and winery construction begun. A first vintage from the young vines followed in 1892. During Prohibition (1920-1933), the vineyard was not fully maintained; some vines survived into the late 30s, but by the 1940s they were effectively abandoned. Eight acres of cabernet sauvignon were replanted in 1949. These were the source of the first Ridge Monte Bello (1962) and subsequent vintages until 1974 when younger blocks replanted in the 1960s were considered for inclusion. Since then, the historic vineyards on the ridge have gradually been replanted.

After late spring rains, mild weather allowed the vines to set a full crop. For concentration, we dropped a third of the clusters. A perfect summer and warm October gave us mature fruit and firm acidity. At assemblage, forty per-cent of the wine made from the twenty distinct vineyard blocks was held out as less intense. In a decade of exceptional vintages, this may be one of the very finest. Despite substantial tannin, the wine is supple, balanced, and accessible. It will continue to evolve in depth and complexity over the next twenty years.

- Producer Tasting Notes

Opaque, saturated ruby in color. Aromas of cassis, fennel, cola, clove-nutmeg spice, toasted oak, wet crushed stone, black tea, and sweet dry chaparral. Palate of ripe cassis, blackberry, and mountain bramble. Lively acid and polished velvety tannins with a smooth, full body and long finish showing limestone mineral and forest floor.

Tasted: Apr 2017
Deep ruby in colour with purple reflections and a discreet ochre rim. Deeply aromatic on the nose with fine oak spice, black Amarena cherries, notes of subtle caramel and tobacco. The highly elegant palate is balanced, with fine cherry fruit and a pleasant berry confit, fine tannins, fresh acidity, rich in finesse and mineral, very long lasting and aged to perfection. Perfect drinking maturity, a great joy to drink. (drinking/+20).

Tobacco, cassis, earth and spicy dark berry scents led to a medium/full bodied, tannic wine. It was surprising to find this much tannin in a 20 year old Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine felt dry in the mouth and could be seen as an austere style of Ridge. It shows like it needs more time. but at 20 years of age, it is what it is. Some tasters are clearly going to enjoy this wine more than I did. I sensed the quality, but this blend of 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc did not offer nearly as much pleasure as the 1991. 90 Points

Tasted: Jan 1999
(1999) My first experience of this, regarded by many afficionados as California's greatest Bordeaux-style wine, 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot. It has a fabulously seductive, opulent nose of blue/black berry fruit, kirsch and sweet violet notes. The palate too is silky and rich, with a core of dense, dusty fruit, a nice cedar and herbal edge, and a wonderfully integrated underpinning structure of ripe tannins and moderate acidity. Drinking beautifully, but still very young.
