Expert tasting note: "Deep, dark, ruby-red - is not opaque but holds color well to the rim. Intense but introverted & developing. spicy oak, milk chocolate & minty touches dominate ripe black-fruits. The palate is beautifully together. Tannins are rounded but firm. Good acidity lifts mellowing red fruits & cinnamon spice, giving lovely length. A big, soft wine with plentiful clean oak spices right to the finish." - 05/99 DCAMW

- Producer Notes
- In 1886, high in the Santa Cruz Mountains, the first Monte Bello vineyards were planted, and winery construction begun. A first vintage from the young vines followed in 1892. During Prohibition (1920-1933), the vineyard was not fully maintained; some vines survived into the late 30s, but by the 1940s they were effectively abandoned. Eight acres of cabernet sauvignon were replanted in 1949. These were the source of the first Ridge Monte Bello (1962) and subsequent vintages until 1974 when younger blocks replanted in the 1960s were considered for inclusion. Since then, the historic vineyards on the ridge have gradually been replanted.

After late spring rains, mild weather allowed the vines to set a full crop. For concentration, we dropped a third of the clusters. A perfect summer and warm October gave us mature fruit and firm acidity. At assemblage, forty per-cent of the wine made from the twenty distinct vineyard blocks was held out as less intense. In a decade of exceptional vintages, this may be one of the very finest. Despite substantial tannin, the wine is supple, balanced, and accessible. It will continue to evolve in depth and complexity over the next twenty years.

Vintage quality: Excellent
Current condition: Ready to drink
For California, 1992 was a very good vintage.
The year began wet, but conditions were still good enough to prompt an early budbreak. Although persistent cool conditions caused millerandage disrupting both Cabernet and Merlot vines. A hot summer caused much of the Me...
