  I’m a Napa cab fan, and found this to be a nice change of pace on a cold winter evening. Dark fruit without being sweet, core of intense herbal liquor. Dense and chewy more than 4 hours after decanting. Curious what this might be like in 5 or 10 years. This is the first of 3 bottles, so I might find out.

  A fantastic evening where I held a wine tasting where the theme was - "High quality, full body wines from different parts of the world". Ch PC and Standish got 2-3 hours in decanter, remaining wines were double decanted which was perfect for the evening. The following wines:
  
  Shafer OnePointFive 2017
  Standish Schubert Theorem 2017
  Nino Negri 5Stelle Sfursat 2016
  K Vintner's The Hidden Syrah 2016
  Chateau Pontet Canet 2012
  Dal Forno Valpolicella Superiore 2011
  
  Shaffer (94 p)
  OnePointFive 2017 is perfect now, the acidity is still so good with the slightly heavier fruit, well balanced, with clear cassis fruit, tobacco, and cedar, don't believe in storing this vintage too long but will definitely last for many more years.
  
  Standish (95p)
  The Schubert Theorem is a masterpiece, the scent is spellbinding, blackberry, blackcurrant, lavender and also black pepper. This is full power but with silk gloves, elegance and balance in perfect harmony. And then 2017 is not a perfect vintage.
  
  Nino Negri (94 p)
  This is Nebiolo on steroids, but how wonderful it is with dried grapes that get full extraction. But balanced by fine acidity that keeps the power in balance. Perfect for cheese and charcuterie.
  
  K Winter's (94 p)
  The Hidden is one of Charles Smith's best wines in my book, meaty, smoky Syrah with nice acidity and lovely blue and red fruits. Generally think that K Vinter's wines should be drunk relatively young, max 6 - 9 years, there is a risk that the acid will lose with age. 2016 is perfect now!
  
  Pontet Canet (96 p)
  All the wines performed at their best during the evening, but the PC 2012 had a complexity that was fantastic with the food and made the wine the best wine of the evening. Like all good Bdx, the wine grows during the evening, from a little shy at first to a fully developed ripe fruit. All the classic elements are in place, cassis, tobacco, licorice, lavender, cedar wood and above all fantastic minerality. What a long finish, unreal good, and then 2012 is a gap year, glad I have 2015, 2016 and 2018 in the cellar!
  
  Dal Forno (93 p)
  Top two producer in Valpolicella, fantastic wines. I think their Superiore is the region's best along with Ernesto Ruffo and Quintarelli. The darkest wine of the evening and, despite its 12 years, full of life. Lovely dark fruit with its typical dried raisins, but with fine acidity and good tannins. Will last for many more years.

  Complex nose: Blackberry. Blueberry. Vanilla, cinnamon. Cedar. Pine. Tobacco. Black liquorice. Dried fruits. Very high aroma intensity. Similar notes on the palate, with more dried fruits. High tannins. Medium plus acidity. Full body. Long finish.
  
  Big wine. Very high quality, well made. In its prime now, but will age another 10 years.
