Time has been kind to this wine. Over 3 years it has developed into a wine with a sense of graphite to kalon fruit (that I often associate with MacDonald), energetic, crystalline black fruits, and a very pleasantly balanced toasted herb on the finish to give some savory appeal. Now this is a wine I’d buy again and again (if ever I could find any back stock left on shelves). A good value under $100 just so long as you’re not expecting Chinon.

A step back towards Detert’s signature flavor profile after what I deemed was an over-the-top 2016 that lost some of the Franc nuance. It is still rich and new world tasty, but the backbone and herb flavors remind you this isn’t some no-name Napa Cab. Good stuff. Probably could have benefited from decanting.

blackberries, black currant, coffee, licorice, dark chocolate, cedar, savory herbs, graphite, and baking spice. Oak integration is fantastic, not over-bearing in any way.
The fruit is big as expected, but is lifted with medium plus acidity giving balance to the wine. Tannins are well integrated but very present, this needs some time to open up, give it a few hours in the decanter.

Against better judgment, pop and pour. This may be the best Detert imbibed to date. Delicious. Grape popsicle.
