(SAN CALISTO Valle Reale) San Calisto Dear Friends, This is one of those rare instances where I know very little about the wine offered - I'm going off a tip received in the middle of the night from a friend in Rome and his success rate over the last 10-15 years is uncanny. The wine is 2007 San Calisto, an old-vine Montepulciano that is among the most talked about wines on the insider circuit in Italy. It’s not as though this is an unknown (last year’s 2006 was a if I remember?) but the 2007 is supposedly a breakout wine that has garnered praise usually reserved for entrants such as Valentini or even Conterno. Luca Maroni is set to anoint the 2007 in his top five red wines in all of Italy (I’ve heard it has a chance at the the top 1-2 spots) and yesterday it was given a . Most telling of all may be the interesting Gambero Rosso rating, above regular Tre Bicchieri (they gave it a ). Basically, for what appears to be a moderate cost, we may have something substantially undervalued on our hands... While I usually do not focus this much attention on reviews, the deck is so heavily stacked that it’s tough to ignore, especially when the tariff is (not like the other typical contenders). If you have any interest in this wine, please let Niki know at your earliest convenience. FIRST COME FIRST SERVED up to 6/person until we run out. This parcel has perfect provenance directly from the source in the Abruzzo... 2007 San Calisto Montepulciano d’Abruzzo - (there are only a few dozen cases of this wine for the entire US, if we run out the NY metro area has 10 or so cases at about the same price) To order: niki@garagistewine.com This parcel is set to depart form Italy – it will arrive in Dec (please check OARS for local pick up after Dec 15th).
