  • Tasted over 2 hrs
-dark red purple minimal clearing stains the glass
-juicy dark berry with a whiff of savory
-med acidity, med weight earthy dark berry faint licorice, med fine chalky tannins
-quite lovely right now and while the fruit has somewhat faded there is still plenty of structure and mid-palate sap to think it might become more interesting if it picks up mature notes

  • I can't believe that it's been six years since I opened a bottle of 09 Brosseau. This bottle is original Copain, been sitting sideways in my cellar since 2011. I opened this yesterday and we used it for a blind tasting, actually paired with the new 2018 DuPuis Baker Ranch Syrah that Wells is making in his new project. I thought it would be cool to reflect Wells, his style and a decade of separation between two wines he had crafted. Of note, I had forgot this wine was 14.0% ABV....a bit of anomaly for Wells but if I recall, 2009 was a riper year so no surprise. What surprised me last night, and continued today even with 24 hours of air, is the structure on this wine. Holy cow, this tastes like something that was bottled 12-18 months ago. Take me at my word when I say that this wine is aging superbly, so fresh and youthful. For sure, the bigger vintage influences the wine, as it does reflect a darker fruit, akin to blackberry but without the sweetness. So, think of an earthy blackberry, blueberry (which for me is classic Brosseau terroir), inky, creosote. The limestone of the vineyard remains alive in the wine, but it's being allowed to play with the intense fruit that remains here. This is my last 2009, and if I had one more in the cellar, I'd think this could go several more years, as it's just stuffed and built so well. Big but not boozy, fresh and delicious.

  • PnP and paired w/ homemade pork ribs. Most enjoyable red wine we drank over the holiday season (to include a favorite: '96 Ridge Monte Bello). All the necessary varietal parts are there and are well integrated, with plenty of fruit. Delicious. Do not know how much more evolution to expect, but is singing now.

  • Blue, black fruits, minty herbs, olive, sweet spices. Full bodied, with a fresh fruit character balanced by some rich meatiness and light oak influence. Drinking very well now with minimal air. Can hold a few years, but I think this is at peak now.

  • With grilled New York strip steak, roast vegetables.
Looks still young, almost completely opaque right to the rim.
We had trouble describing the aroma - it was complex and lovely. Good depth of flavor and balance.
