Giving it an extra point for surprise What not expecting a lot but delivered more than we expected Dark inky colour was a hot. Smoky nose. Musky dark fruit. All in all not bad

Drink this now, at its peak. The only 2 notes are in line with my thoughts I think. Dark inky purple in glass, nose is a little musty smoke. Palate is med+bodied with light acid and smooth tannin. Fruit is smoked dark berry/cherry notes. Licorice? I don't get that. Maybe some herbal quality or vanilla in there, but hard to pick out for me. Finish is long'ish and is still like a lightly smoked wet dog/light tart cherry note. More importantly is an interesting package, and grape variety/region such that you should clearly try this, but not beyond 2014.

Vale do Vinhedos (Vale do Vinhedos, RS): Blackish purple, impressive depth of colour. Closed nose, some minerals, herbs. Mouth-coating tannins, liquorice again, fruit kernels, tar. Not short on power but a real brute.

Ex-cellar. Consistent with previous note although it felt a bit more settled this time.
