  • Prior bottle was almost two years ago and this exceeded that. recalling how well some of my earlier bottles showed. Black cherry, black raspberry and spice notes on the nose. Just a bit over medium bodied with a combination of black cherry, black raspberry and plum. Mid-body shows depth and the fruit notes have beautiful clarity and very nice definition. The overall impression is one of elegance and nuance, as the fruit and structural qualities are more in balance than previously to the benefit of both. Tart black cherry, integrated tannins and earth on the backside and through the finish. The fruit doesn't have the power some of my initial bottles showed, but the wine is the better for it as it allows the nuances to shine. Based on this bottle, in a great spot now and should be able to hold this level over the next 12-18 months.

  • Prior bottle was almost fours years ago (February 2017) and while the wine still shows quite well, it has taken a small step down from the heights it previously occupied. Black cherry, raspberry and earth notes on the nose. Between medium and full bodied with mostly red cherry upfront now with some black cherry highlights. Raspberry comes in through the middle and then lightly tart black cherry, fine grained tannins and earth notes on the back and through the finish. While still showing at a high level, it didn't have quite the depth through the middle of the full measure of elegance that it previously did. That said, the fruit still showed well and has the structure so that overall balance remains a strength. Drink over the next two years to enjoy it at this level.

  • PnP. A slightly more feminine version of pinot noir. Aromas of mostly red fruits and spice, along with an earthy streak. These follow on to the medium bodied palate, along with some dark red fruit, nicely balancing acidity, completely integrated tannins, and a medium to plus finish. Drinking well now, and will probably hold for several years.

  • Ruby red. Red cherries, fennel, roses and aromatic spices constitute the aromatics. Medium-bodied, with a texture that can only be described as liquid silk, loaded with dark fruits, earth, mineral, and a touch of mint. Very long on the finish, with very fine grained tannins arriving quite late. Yet another outstanding Pinot Noir from Paul Lato, now squarely in its sweet spot. No doubt that this will drink well for years to come, yet it is awfully hard to resist now. 95.

  • My last bottle was over two years ago (November 2014) and the wine has evolved considerably in that time. Blackberry and black raspberry on the nose. Close to full bodied (14.5% ABV) and opened two hours ahead of time, drank over an additional three and got better and better the longer it was open. Blackberry upfront which retains some brightness, adding in nice background depth with black raspberry and black cherry. Well balanced acidity on the back and the finish provides both structure and tart contrast. Tannins are almost imperceptible; they are that well integrated, adding structure and a pleasant creaminess in the background.

When first opened, I was a little concerned as it seemed a bit candied, with a lot of spicy and stemmy notes. All of that blew off before I had my first glass and where the wine ended up at the 5 hour mark was quite special. It's a California style pinot, but with a depth and elegance that most can't come close to pulling off. As I had hoped, the wine has integrated incredibly well which allows the mid-body to be much more expressive and the balance is just stellar. Each glass was better than the one before and the last three were approaching sublime. High points were the overall flavor complexity, the silky elegance and the overall balance. As far as structure and integration go, this wine is at peak (as long as you open it a few hours ahead). It should easily last for many more years, so no rush. Hopefully, I can find some more!
