  • Seemed a bit hot out of the bottle. Decanted for 1 hour, after which this wine was phenomenal. Plummy dank blackish fruit on the nose. Plum, deeply marinated cherries, blueberry liquor, a bit of crispy apple, pepper, earth. Wonderful on the palate with lengthy finish. Superb. Drink now with a brief decant and enjoy!

  • Decanted for an hour, and this was spectacular. Nose is predominantly lighter fruit with deeper plum notes and a hint of Sambuca. Strawberries, leather, minimal tobacco on the palate and evolving deep tropical notes on the finish, which is lengthy and continuously changing. I've sampled this a few times over the last 4-5 years, and can't imagine this getting better from here. Excellent showing.

  • This is in a really nice place right now. Slight mature dark purple fruit tones, but there's some bright red fruit as well. Nice crisp and dare I say a slightly tart subtleties, offering a unique and quite pleasant twist. Long finish. Awesome now, but no rush here ... this should hold up for several more years. Very enjoyable.

  • An inky purple. Opens with a dark berry nose, menthol. The fruit aromas tend to fade. Palate is medium-full, still tart and mildly tannic, but the fruit is further in the background than a year ago, making it a bit austere.

  • Mayfair tasting group does Syrah (Denver, CO): Opened, not decanted and served blind one hour later. Deep ruby color, slight sign of age. Clearly New World with plenty of alcohol and cherry cough syrup leading the way at first. The palate was full-bodied, but proved as uninteresting as the nose. My #8 of 9, group #8. The format called for points, so I gave this one 86, guessed Washington state and guessed 2007. The 2oz or so that I had upon first pour did not change during the following 2 hours. At the end of the blind tasting, we re-visited the bottles that were showing well- all of them got drained in the following 2 hours, all of them having openedup completely by that time. The Piedrasassi saw no more takers that night and was re-corked for someone to have the next day (prolly the person that supplied it). This was not a flawed bottle, I think it just showed so poorly when tasted side-by-side with some really fantastic Syrah from all over the world. Drink now, not getting better, score: B

(PIEDRASASSI Syrah) UPDATE: Blue Hill Dinner I've received a number of reservation inquiries this week regarding Friday's Blue Hill event. Unfortunately, it is completely sold out - I wish we had 50 more seats but the venue is just too small. For those of you that did secure a ticket, please bring your stamina at 6:30pm - it's going to be a long and interesting night... - Jon Rimmerman ****************************** Odds and Ends Dear Friends, A few small parcels that are immanent (see below for arrival dates). All have impeccable provenance at excellent prices for their respective genre's. Limited quantities prevents all three from being offers on their own: 2004 Piedrasassi Syrah (Santa Ynez Valley) Terroir in California? Try this - a wine that will make many swoon... 2000 Roederer Cristal Brut Rose' Champagne For some reason, we've had numerous requests for Cristal this holiday season. We don't typically carry something like this but, here you go...at what should be about the same tariff as the cellar-door. This is their insanely expensive Rose', not the regular Brut. Please limit order requests to 12/person: 2008 Reinhold Haart Riesling Spètlese Ohligsberger Erste Lage (Mosel) (no comparisons available - I believe this sells for around $60 at restaurants in Germany) Haart has become this year's 2001 Donnhoff (after the 95pt score for the Piesporter GoldtrÜpfchen Spatlese) and allocations are being cut left and right. What used to be $18 is now $40 and the only explanation is profit somewhere along the chain? The Ohligsberger is Haart's coddled Spatlese with very high aspirations - the winery considers it their best expression in 2008 so you can use your own imagination. This wine is like a synthesis of FX Pichler and the middle Mosel with a rock-soaked, low-pradikat finish that stays on the palate for over a minute. For the field it is playing in, this is a serious achievement and it's as rare as Mosel Riesling gets - expect much higher prices in the near future. Only 80-100 cases produced and 15 of them are for export (I'm not kidding - 180 bottles to split between the wine world). Our miniscule allocation is set to arrive in a few weeks - there is no other parcel available for the US. Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA CA8050 Champ8213 Germ6499
