Nose is dark fruit. With a lot of the classic leather and cigar box, cedar and tobacco, meaty and forest floor. Palate starts a little bitter but melts into a chewy oakey black cherry bomb with present but melted tannins and a medium finish. Nice acidity, tannins are there but not in your face.

Maturing garnet colour. Nose with floral highlights. The palate starts sweet and voluptuous, but there is good acidity and some soft tannin. ***1/2 and my favourite 2012 so far (against little serious opposition).

Decanted for two hours before the first glass, with a further two hours. This was not enough! Too young, still, in my view, although there are some interesting tertiary flavours developing. If I had another, I'd probably try it in a few years, or else open it six hours before drinking. In any case, this is not a wine of great complexity, albeit one of some charm and elegance in balance with medium power.

Seven years since the last bottle. It has evolved—a nose of spices, coffee, lead, oak, dark fruit, and hints of tar. The Palate has cassis, almonds, tar, and dark fruit. There is still a lot of structure and tightness.

Yes, this is a winner. And who have thought it? Batailley from 2012? Blimey.
On the nose, an attractive combination of soft tannin and dark fruit. On the palate the same. Wonderful integration. This is the best Batailley that I have drunk.
And here is a passing note for you: because they have retained their tannin the 2012s may be more classical than the 2009s.
