  • Rhône or Nôwhere 2.0 (Malcolm, NE): This was a real treat after the Gentaz-Dervieux since Rene Rostaing is Marius Gentaz’s son-in-law. While the vineyards that belonged to Marius are now famously part of the Rostaing domaine, that vineyard goes to Rene’s Côte Brune; this is his Côte Blonde and arguably his most famous bottling. This 2004 pours a cloudy ruby with brambles, purple flowers, blood, dust and leather. Slightly rustic which is what I want from Rostaing. I love the individuality and how it paired with the Iberico pork cheek, mushroom ragu with lavender and thyme. Plenty of life left. Drink through 2034+. Merci Matt!

  • Developed pale red. On the nose, no doubt some bacon and meaty notes here, but also full of fruit. No more than medium plus weight on the palate. Complex succulent fully ripe Syrah - though I am not sure how complex Syrah really gets - with enough acid still to provide freshness. Runs fluidly across the palate. Silky. Gently earthy. Very red fruited. Some fine-grained tannin still. Finesse. Good length. Fully mature now, and in a good place, I would not wait too long on this. Very complete. Delicious. Bought on release.

  • Popped and poured. Classic nose of bacon, purple fruit and hint of barnyard. Not as stinky as usual. Very elegant, fine tannins, nice grip but silky and refined.

  • Same bottle as Derek. This was my own bottle and rather disappointing. Plenty of leather and earth and only a touch of dry fruit left. At the same time not particularly complex but rather a bit tired and lacking energy. This was clearly better 3 and 8 years ago, so I would not keep any longer and drink up.

  • Northern Rhones at Min Jiang: This was a wine that confused me - I first guessed 70s because of the tertiary sous-bois notes but it became fresher and fresher with air. At the end of the night it was showing beautifully, its balance and elegance reminded me of a Burgundy from a top maker. Pure silk on the palate, autumnal fruit contributed to a haunting finish. I don’t think many agreed but my favourite on the night.
