  • Last of a 3 bottle purchase from the tasting room during our first stay in Yountville.

Opened and into the decanter, showing expected signs of aging, nice bricking one the edges, translucent at the core.

At 60 min, I would have called this a teenage BDX, restrained silky, balanced. Sage, fresh herbs, tea, leather, cigar box on the nose, primarily sour red cherries on the palate but refreshing nonetheless with a good acidic backbone carrying on to a medium finish, with a slight citrusy end note. 93 pts

At 2 hrs, this gets green leafy and herbal on the nose, touch of cinnamon and dirt. The wine glides over the palate, but the fruit note is gone. 88 pts. Mrs. Geaux makes a blah face and tells me to quit being charitable...so there’s another data point.

Lesson learned, in hindsight I would have PnP’d. I don’t think this improves with further aging, so drink em now or in the next few years.

  • Decanted 90 min and drank over 90 min. Lovely floral perfumed nose with hints of smoke and blood. Black cherry, blueberry, iron, burning ember on the palate. Blind I would’ve picked Eastern Oakville from the red dirt but alas this is Rutherford. Tannins and oak integrated. Medium finish with a hint of black and white pepper that was surprisingly complimentary

  • Napa Visit 2016; 7/10/2016-7/13/2016: -still some tannins to resolve, bright red in color. Red /black fruit on subtle earthy palate. Worth buying 1-2 and seeing where this goes. Need 3-5 years in the cellar.

  • Sourced entirely from Beckstoffer's Melrose Vineyard in Rutherford, this deep-to-opaque ruby wine is impressive from the get-go. Comprised of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, it was aged for 22 months in French oak (70% new). On the nose, it offers black currants, dark chocolate, baking spices and licorice. Full-bodied, fresh and with ample fine-grained tannins, it delivers flavors mirroring the aromas, has no alcoholic heat (14.2%) and stays solid in the middle. Lingering long and smooth on the back end, this is an impressive Cabernet that should be at its best after a few years of cellaring. Drink 2019-2030.
