Spread out over steep, narrow terraces, the Banyuls appellation overhangs the Mediterranean Sea. More than two thousand years old, the vineyards are still hand-worked, and are rooted in stony schist soils. M. Chapoutier Banyuls is a "vin doux naturel," fortified wine that is exceptional and age-worthy. It is naturally sweet, shows full fruit and wonderful character and is universally perfect with fruit and/or chocolate desserts.

Gobs of ripe and cooked fruit but with a freshness you don't find in tawny and ruby port. the fruit is sweet but not raisined. blackberry and blueberry pie filling, cherry cordial, fig and strawberry jam. the list goes on.
more savory black chocolate, coffee bean and anise notes mingle with the fruit but this is all about the berries.
i don't have enough experience with banyuls to say how this will mature but i'd hope a few years would show more subtlety and nuance. that being said, this is a real treat for immediate consumption.

What a great desert wine. Sweet without being over the top. Port like with a bit drier finish. Cleaner more delineated. Very enjoyable.
