Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 92 points

  • 750 Wine Tasting (Saint Helena): Tasting event at 750 Wines in St. Helena with winemakers Russell Bevan, Aaron Pott, Benoit Touquette, Roy Piper, Helen Keplinger, Dan Petroski (Larkmead), Sam Kaplan (Memento Mori, Arkenstone, Nine Suns), Tom Garrett (Dakota Shy, Detert), Jennifer Williams (Arrow & Branch), and others.

This was a sample of the 2014 Memento Mori Premier Napa Valley auction lot, of which came a 5 case lot that sold for over $100K. Well, I'm not a Swiss wine enthusiast with money to throw at the wind, but I was lucky enough to try this wine.

Obviously this wine is well constructed with an eye toward quality. It is very young and extremely tight. It's youth is very apparent and it lacks the depth of flavor one might expect from a top tier wine, even at this early stage of life.

Specific notes of black and red berry fruit, black licorice, gravel, and alcohol. Disjointed and hard to track (it lacked seamlessness that forbid it from enveloping the palate in any coherent way), but it appeared to have the stuffing necessary to broaden out in the long run. This is certainly a "hold for later" wine; provided that the fruit can stay energetic and fresh, at least three-five years will be needed to get this wine into proper form.

92+ points for now, with a definite upside in the coming years for a 92-94 point score. Not an earth-shattering palate explosion of a wine, but more of a curio, especially at the end auction price of over $1,700 a bottle... Yikes!
