Veronique Drouhin (the force behind DDO’s greatness) had just graduated from the University of Dijon and completed the 1986 harvest with Adelsheim, Bethel Heights, and Eyrie Vineyards. At that moment in time, the future of this family was so clearly Oregon. Now, 30 years later, DDO is releasing wines from their newest parcel of land—a 279-acre vineyard called Roserock in the Eola-Amity Hills. As the inaugural vintage, the 2014 Pinot Noir is setting the stage for what Roserock will be. The vintage? Classic Oregon. A long, warm growing season lead to an abundant (and welcome) harvest. After 2013, which proved a little more difficult for many Oregon producers, 2014 was a redemption vintage. Roserock Drouhin couldn’t ask for a better debut. This bottle opens with a wonderfully spiced, intense nose of plum, red and black cherry, dried flowers, and savory earth. The palate continues with elegant intensity. Notes of dark fruit take over, followed by flower petals and stoney minerality. The finish is long and strong, with a deep sense of authority. It’s dark and beautiful throughout. The wine offers up a deep and youthful nose that still shows a bit of whole cluster influence in its complex mix of red and black cherries, vinesmoke, lovely dark soil tones, a dollop of fresh thyme and a discreet framing of cedary wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, nascently complex and nicely sappy at the core, with fine transparency, tangy acids, fine-grained tannins and impeccable balance on the long, focused and very promising finish. This wine shows superb backend energy and will be dynamite with a bit of bottle age.
