Community Tasting Notes (1)

  • 90/91. Bret Hogan's first-ever SB under his own label, Cote West (he's consulted on others). This is sourced from one of Merry Edwards' favorite SB sites, and the pedigree shows: this is perfectly behaved Cali SB fruit. (A radically different style of wine than ME's, though -- radically more restrained). Hint of oak for texture, but beyond that slight reduction in acid and slight addition in palate-weight, there's no wood evident. Right out of the bottle all you get are the citrus notes: bright and yellow. 10 minutes in that familiar SB body odor begins to enter, to my great delight: there's real varietal typicity here, at levels you expect from the greatest, most unadorned versions. As the glass warms up, the nose moves from citrus to slightly more tropical flavors. Never grassy. Starts simply, evolves well. Winemaker to watch.
