  • A debonair Wendouree, still in its youth.

Amazingly young looking for a nine year old. Vibrant dark purple, only a hint of fading on the rim. A wine where first appearances don’t lie.

Quintessential Cab nose. Blackberry and black currant, crushed leaf, then cassis/jube gum, with understated Wendouree walnut, a pinch of tobacco. Avoids the Eucalypt trait often seen in Wendouree Cabernet and Cab/Malbec.

Beautiful palate. Medium bodied and fresh. Powdery tannin fused with fine acid. An easy intensity, like a JJ Cale track. A slight char-chewy edge adds to the mosaic of flavours and textures. Makes so many other Cabernets look worked or contrived. Again, the freshness and balance are spell binding.

And not from the most acclaimed vintage. Sandwiched between the opulent 2013 and potent 2015, the 2014’s elegance flew a little under the radar. An aristocratic beauty. Noblesse oblige.

  • Over 2 days. Blackcurrant, faint cherry and a touch of cigar. Very good wine, which will probably get better from here. 94 at least. Something like 94-96

  • Double decanted around 2pm and then let sit in a large decanter for 4 hours, it opened up nicely and also continued to improve whilst consuming.
Medium bodied/weight, blackcurrants/ribena, ferrous/iron tones, some dried herbs, spice, a touch of menthol. Good level of acidity and grippy tannins on the finish. Really loved the structure and balance of the wine. A long lingering finish. Lovely wine. Note to self, next one in 10 years.

  • Black currant, blackberry, black and red cherry. Herbs and spice. A little eucalyptus. Nice grip of tannin and just over medium weight. The highlight here though is the balance. Nothing to fault. Lovely.
