  • I would in fairness note that I was at the same tasting as Salil, and in fact brought this wine to this tasting. Since he isn't taking comments on his post I wanted to add that of the 12 Syrah/Shiraz wines in this tasting being rated and scored by a fairly formidable group that this was in fact rated the #1 wine of the evening (something I didn't realize until this morning when results were published). Everyone has their own taste and Salil veers toward French Syrah with which he is far more familiar.

  • WCC Syrah from around the world tasting (Clifton Park, NY): Quite similar to the first wine in this flight (which turned out to be the same producer) with similar intensity and aromatic profile, though the aromatics here are less floral and high-toned and there's more of a savoury, toasty element here. But this also feels a bit heavier and lacks the acidity and lift of the first wine.

  • The star.. and anchor point of our Australian theme Vivino Singapore mini-gathering this week, "Aussie wines which match Chris' Runrig 04!"

Aged 20 years and taking the years in its stride, this still has at least 5-10 years cellaring potential. 96.5% Shiraz and 3.5% Viognier.

    🇦🇺 Barossa sub-region:
Marananga, Greenock, Moppa, Gomersal, Kalimna & Ebenezer.

    🍯 Fermentation:
Each of the 8 parcels of fruit were gently de-stemmed into both wooden & concrete open top fermenters where they were carefully nurtured for 6-7 days on skins.

After basket pressing the wine was run directly into both new and old French barriques where they spent 30 months with minimal racking.

During the final ‘assemblage’ a small addition (3.5%) of estate grown Viognier was added and the wine was later bottled without the use of filtration or fining.

    📅 2004 Barossa vintage:
Heavy fruit set meant high yields were initially predicted, but bunch thinning brought crop levels to manageable levels for a focus on quality.

Heatwave conditions in mid Feb put acidity at risk, with its decline in acidity.
Saved by the Indian summer which meant no huge rainfall and temps of 25 to 30C.

    Overall a very good vintage.

Full bodied but the concentration and intensity has given way to super fine tannins, acidity M and best of all those rich plum notes. Stunning!

Colour: Despite a 20Y age.. still dense, almost ink like hue, with barely any rim.

Nose: Black raspberries, crème de cassis, with light smoke aromatics. Hints of graphite after 2 hours too.

Full bodied with such power, which is not in great balance after 20Y!

Lively and fresh, great complex palate with fruit purity and a 30-40 sec long finish.

Thank you generously sharing this, @Chris Quek.

  • Dark ruby purple in color. Soaring aromas of candied black raspberries, blueberries, licorice, violets and bbq smoke. The full-bodied palate shows dense, sweet and savory dark berry compote, hint of olive tapenade, smoked meat, medium acidity and a very long finish.

(Torbreck Run Rig Red) #1; VaynerPAZZZ (based on QPR); COLOR-dark; NOSE-a Brouhaha of fruit; a absolutely massive Skittle Rainbow; an explosion of red, dark & tropical fruits (coconut, mango, papaya, star fruit, red currant); almost has a Root Beer component; fruit forward/fruit bomb city; TASTE-this is out and out indulgence & explosion all over your palate; pure fruit; very thick & jammy; almost not wine-esque; jammy cherry reduction sauce; this wine is completely over-the-top; there's a orange marmalade on the finish; this is what New World fruit bombs are all about; massive fruit explosion done right; there's a creamy Coconut milk component; mangos; the orange & tangerine marmalade on the finish is wild and the most distinct & obvious flavor in this wine; great backbone structure; great tannins & polish; a very explosive, viscous & massive wine; will last 20+ years (or it may disappear - we don't know about these fruit bombs); JM-99; GV-94/95
