  • Nice mature but still ways to go. Don't think it will improve though.

  • This was way different than when I had it a year ago. Maybe also because this time it was in a setting with about a dozen wines on the table (all new world lolly pop bombs) while last time it was solo.

Hence it was overshadowed by a 2006 Rudd which was WOTN for many. That was a bomb. None of them were my style. This was mid range comparatively of the other 12.

Decanted 2 hours before consuming which helped. It was smooth but not very interesting. Definitely in a prime spot for drinking, probably won't improve but doesn't seem to be falling off the cliff.

In a sea of boring hollow napa wines this got lost in its own non descript lolly pop component.

  • Decanted off sediment and back to bottle for a few hours.

14.2 ABV. Pours a shockingly deep color. The nose was much more intriguing than the palate. Dark and red fruis that had just turned secondary. Maybe some subtle leather earthy notes. Palate was still dense with integrated dark fruits and red cherries, little bit of clay earth. Finish showed some tannic structure and dried red fruits.

In no way would I have guessed this to be a ~20yo wine. Maybe 8-10y at best. Certainly has a long life ahead but a bit ripe and dense for my preference. From a quality and aging standpoint this is a 93-94, albeit not my favorite wine.

  • decanted and showed a very big nose of sweet fruit while decanting. Smoky nose with lots of plum. Some 40 minutes later the nose was wonderfully woodsy, really fragrant in the mouth on the finish. Ripe and juicy, there's good concentration without strong tannins. Still pretty good more than 2½ hours later but has gone off its peak by then.

  • Opened and tasted, a bit high acidity and harsh tannins, flat with short finish. All expected of course. Placed in the decanter for a short 15 minutes and then the music began…

The wine is medium plus body, the nose is beautiful perfume, on the palate it has it all, still good fruit, tabaco and herbs, minerality, good acidity, fine tannins, great complexity, and ending with the finesse of a graceful matured Napa Cabernet.

This paired nicely with a Churrasco medium rare and some cheese.

Great now, possibly at its peak but no rush.
