  • Still a little austere on opening.

  • Wholly dominated by grainy tannins for a long time, but still good to drink very cold, near refrigerator temperature, especially with food. Then the tannins soften and integrate, easing the wine texturally and unlocking some fruit-derived flavors. I liked the wine very well, and the flavors that ultimately emerged were pleasant, but they weren't interesting enough that I could counsel a friend, for example, they were worth cellaring a bottle for 16 years to experience. I still have a half-dozen bottles or so, and it will be interesting to see where the wine goes from here.

  • Shockingly young. Needs about an hour in a decanter, then delicious.

  • First from my stash, I think. From memory, so no details, but this wine is in a very fine place now. Tiny bit of carbon spritz on opening, fades rapidly. Fine, mature Morgon, smooth-textured, well-integrated flavors and aromas, very suave. An excellent bottle.

  • Agree with basically everything Brooklyguy has written on this wine. My one disagreement would be perhaps where this is going. Many of my 2005 cru beaujolais have been surly and unappealing for many years until recently, when most of them have blossomed into things of beauty. Perhaps, this one is just a little slow. It certainly seems to have the material. For now, however, it is surly and requires some significant effort to get to a place of modest enjoyment. Ultimately, judgement reserved.

Rockss and Fruit

(Desvignes Morgon "Javernieres" (Upper Tier)) This was absolutely soaring and was one of the greatest showings for this remarkable wine so far. Two bottles showed up in the basement and I quickly bought one to check as my others are at offsite storage. The nose is bramble city with fresh strawberries, raspberries and loads of wet earth. Burgundian to say the least. Lots of spice, menthol and mineral too. The palate is intense and dare I say, explosive, with red fruits soaking up every inch of your mouth. Such density for Gamay. Incredible fruit and minerality with ripe tannins that spread way back on the palate. Wonderful wine and for the long haul.
