  • Fully agree with Apple1813 below, save for one point. The empty bottle weighed 887 grams. Very tasty Chard à la Tolpuddle, Kumeu new world structure, flavour profile.

  • 2018 Concha y Toro Amelia Quebrada Seca Chardonnay had great aromatic depth and precision. The youthful Limarí Valley Chardonnay was clear and pale lemon in colour without any sediments. Aromas of fresh pear, honeysuckle, bread and mint were followed by riper tones of yellow peach and pineapple. Underneath were notes of flint and subtle spices.

The mouthfeel was dry and verging full-bodied, balanced by a high level of precise acidity. Flavours of lemon zest, red apple and apricot transitioned to hazelnut and cream on a toast in a long, mineral-laced finish. I adored its restraints in oak and malolactic artefact, which allowed the fruits and white flowers to take the central stage. While it was pleasurable to drink young, the relatively new cuvée (debut in 2017) had yet to develop a track record in its age-worthiness. The alcohol level was at 13.5%. The empty bottle weighed 888 grams.

The vines are cultivated on calcareous clay soils, at an elevation of 190 metres above the sea level. The cooling influences of the altitude, breezes from the Pacific Ocean and morning clouds allow prolonged growing season for fresh and flavourful wine. The juice is fermented and raised for twelve months in French oak barrels, of which 18% is new and the rest are second or third-fill. Marcelo Papa is the winemaker of the top-notch Chilean Chardonnay, and the label is named after his wife.

  • 95pts. Drank with fscov, his bottle. This is probably the best Chardonnay of Chile these days, and sells for half of what one must pay for anything near this quality from another countries. My complete notes can be seen below. Excellent.

  • Best recent white wines of Chile - Descorchados 2020/2021: 95pts. The winner of this small tasting. Single blind I thought this was the Las Pizarras, and vice-versa. I could not at first believe the Amelia would be so good, because past vintages weren't. But it seems that its new vineyard at Limari Valley, called Quebrada Seca, imparted this wine with complexity and length it did not possess when it was sourced from the Casablanca Valley. Then again, Quebrada Seca is a really special vineyard, perhaps top three in the southern hemisphere for white wines.

This Amelia is definitely new-world, though. On the nose, there were notes of peaches, white flowers, and spices - I could smell that all day long. On the palate it was more complex - here I got lots of tropical and subtropical fruit, with pineapple, lemon, lime, orange peel and kiwi notes. Some mint too. Excellent salinity and spiciness, long, and mouth-coating. A must have if you enjoy Chilean wines.
