  • After a few disappointing 2004s in recent years, this was more like I remember from Aalto: vibrant dark berries, floral nose, smoke. Lush and long. Not for the oak-adverse, but it is high-class oak and it harmonized well with the fruit, so that the fruit was never smothered. An enjoyable drink.

  • Drank with Ginny. Dark purple. Black raspberries, fresh plum and baking spices on the nose. Blueberry cobbler, ripe cherry, vanilla, and still plentiful tannins to match the sweetness. Big, layer upon layer of dark fruits and a finish that persists for minutes. Amazing. Still youthful but drinking well now. My last bottle of this vintage.

  • 1+ hour decant. Unfortunately, this bottle was not quite as good as my previous ones. Still a good bottle of wine though. 93 pts.

  • Very modern with sweet blueberry, ash and herbs up front but finishing with a very tannic backbone. I’m not sure about this wine. Good with paella although I either burned the soccarat or something during the sauntering step so my taste buds may be a bit altered. It seemed really big and modern and maybe not better for it. Still it’s an easy wine to like because of that. It’s clear that it fits the mode for huge ratings from Overrater Bob.

(PS Aalto) Aalto PS Dear Friends, This could have been our main holiday special but we can't label everything with that tag or it starts to look foolish (especially for a $100 wine). Let's just call this what it is - a terrific price with impeccable provenance. Every so often I come across something (regardless of price-point) that is worth the effort to secure. Some treasures rise above the rest and this is certainly is one of them (even though the style goes against my typical palate preference). While "value" is difficult to quantify or qualify, if you are in the market for the very finest collectable wine that may usurp your favorite classified growth in the complexity department (given the requisite time), this wine has that distinct opportunity. I realize this is a substantial sum for a bottle of wine but it has the nearly indescribable pent up energy and layered extractive material to return 20-40 years of ageing and it is the qualitative equal of nearly any Bordeaux from the 2005 vintage - it's actually tough to find one that I believe has more potential than this (even 2005 Latour - maybe Ausone but it will age in a different way). I waited to try my second bottle of the 2005 PS for three months after my first encounter to see if the first one was a mirage - it wasn't. This is the real thing - even if you disdain high-impact wines: I urge you to look up other opinions on this wine as it has struck a chord with a varied set of palates, not just the disciples of Bob (in fact, it's most impressive for those won over that are not in that camp - including this writer). Please note, this is not the regular Aalto, which is also excellent in 2005. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED ONE SHIPMENT ONLY directly from the source with perfect provenance 2005 Aalto Ribera del Duero "PS" (Pagos Seleccionados) (this is not the regular Aalto) Thank you, Jon Rimmerman Garagiste Seattle, WA Spain6550
