  • Head to head 2014 LPV. Schrader vs Memento Mori. 7 hour slow ox and drank over 2 days. The Schrader was the clear winner. The MM was a bit one dimensional and didn’t improve at all Day 2. Good but certainly not exceptional.

  • This rich and dense Cabernet needs another year or so to come into its own - the core is there in spades, but the rest of the wine needs to catch up. If drinking now, decant at least an hour.

Ruby red in color and full in body, the wine offers aromas of black cherry, graphite, black licorice, and crushed gravel. Tastes of blueberry pie, boysenberry, milk chocolate, rosemary, and gravel, with a sweet and lingering finish that loses its heaviness with air. 15.2% alcohol.

I was hoping this wine would be monumental, but it was just really, really good (first world problems, I know!). The concentration here was striking - much more saturated than the general MM - but it’s also why this wine seems to need more time. 94-95 for now, with upside in another few years (really, wait on this one).

  • Mike Smith Tasting and Wine Dinner PART #2: Black core fruit, with some black currant, blue river rock, scorched earth, and purple plum skin. A good deal of energy and verve for a 2014, and much more compelling than the standard 2014 MM. From the front, to the middle, to the back (like the Caro Emerald song “Back It Up!”), this wine delivered on all fronts. A day later, this was still full of life. A really nice, gravelly grip housed the dark gothic core fruit. A solid representation of the site.

  • This is pretty brilliant. Perhaps not quite as spectacular as the 2015 version, but still magnificent. MM must have one amazing block of LPV. Deep, dark black and brooding in the glass. With that color, I expected a lot of oak and toast in the aroma, but not the case at all. Gorgeous notes of blackcurrant, roasted coffee, dark chocolate and wet stone minerality. Wonderful silky mouthfeel of full bodied dark fruit mixed with deep loamy earth flavors. Really coats the pallet with many nuanced layers of flavor. Fine and well integrated tannins. Very long finish. Really excited about the SVD's from MM. Too bad there aren't more of them to go around. 96+
