Impressive given the pedigree. Rich up front, even showing some oak still. Fades in expression at the midpalate quite plainly. Strong acidity and light tannin. I really liked this classic Cab expression even if it was incomplete. It didn't come at a big cost and is quite lively yet. Souverain was definitely old school when it came to winemaking back in the day. The state of their wines beyond two decades into the next century is a great testament to that skill.

Finally got the cork out in one piece! Have had half a dozen of these in the past 15 years, and the only bad thing about these wines are the corks turning to sawdust when you try to remove! A QPR Champion here, still holding on to the magic. Although not the 91 Winemakers Reserve, which is absolute MIND-BLOWING wine...this reg 91 is still drinking quite nicely, especially since it's such a cheapo, and was never intended to be aged out for 30yrs! Dark plum, slight rose rim color...super dusty, minty, leather, walnut oil, dried leaves, cigar wrapper, plumberry nose. Fruit still sweet...plum, cherry, currants...soft and dusty pencil tannins...slight cherry skin sours for a refreshing acidity kick...subtle complexities of leather, menthol tobacco, dried leaf pile...and that crazy dusty cigar box. This bottle seems a lot fresher than the last one 9 years ago...maybe from the sounder cork? More subtle and lighter bodied than the reserve, of course, yet that wine is a freak! Classical old school...classical 1991...just plan class!

Nothing to not like with this wine! Dark red color, plum and dark cherry aromas, dense fruit on palate, very smooth, tannins are fully integrated, finish would put a lot of expensive cabs to shame. Plenty of life left in this one. Great value. Dare we mention that it is 28 years old. Purchased at Vineyard. Served with Prime grade Ribeye steaks.

(Souverain Cabernet Sauvignon Alexander Valley) Group's #2 (my #3) – 32 pts; 1 1st place vote, 3 2nd place votes, 2 thirds, 0 last places – Lovely dried and ripe cherry and sandalwood nose; rich, ripe plum and cherry palate with hints of leather and firm but sweet tannins; short-medium finish

Trying to drink these as they are on the downslope, but what a wine!
