Community Tasting Notes (5) Avg Score: 89.4 points

  • -- decanted immediately before tasting --
    -- tasted non-blind over a few days --
    -- 68% Grenache, 16% Syrah, 16% Petite Sirah --

    NOSE: red-fruited; high-toned; ballpoint pen ink; does have some aged fruit aromas; expressive; moderate complexity.

    BODY: sediment present; hazy; violet-garnet color of medium-deep depth; {forgot to note weight}

    TASTE: Australian black licorice – molasses and anise; plenty of tertiary character; high acidity; hint of oak; hint of coffee; 15.2% alc. not noticeable; the Syrah and Petite Sirah are very nice here; quite impressed with how well this has aged; held-up well on Days 2 and 4, but I don't see this improving from here, so Drink Now.

  • despite being almost six years old, this wine seemed very fresh and lively...lots of red fruits

  • Rustic in nature. Deep, dark cherry flavor with a nice earth and mineral element. Nose is subdued. Nice wine but don't think it's much better than a $14 CDR.

  • -- popped and poured --
    -- tasted non-blind from a half-full bottle that had been open for a few hours --
    -- 68% Grenache, 16% Syrah, 16% Petite Sirah --

    NOSE: notes of bramble, oak, black pepper, asphalt, and strong red fruits - (strawberry gushers ... those candy fruit snacks) and black cherries; a bit alcoholic on the nose and still somewhat tight.

    BODY: lots of superfine particulate matter is suspended in this wine; cherry red color of medium depth; medium bodied.

    TASTE: juicy red fruits as well as plum; restrained oak; an earthy minerality comes through on the medium-long finish (45-50 sec.); finish has nice intensity; full palate; easy drinking; a bit lacking in acidity and the alcohol (15.2%) comes through a bit on the palate; the tannins in this wine have softened considerably since I last tasted on 11/2/2008. Drinks fine now, but I think it will get better with some bottle age. Hold.

    B: 50, 5, 11, 16, 7 = 89

    EDIT: Day 4 (3/8/09): even better today ... same minerality on finish as on Day 1, but now incredible aroma and flavor of cranberry chutney with orange peel have emerged. The alcohol that was present on the bouquet and palate on Day 1 is gone. Asphalt aroma from Day 1 is gone, as well.

    Day 4:
    B: 50, 5, 12, 17, 7 = 91

  • Took this to a chili tasting so only had a small taste and did not take formal notes. However, went well with the chili. Really nice fruit.
