1/6, excellent cork. Decanted 1/2 hr. Deep garnet/ruby core, narrow pale ruby rim. Nose shows ripe blueberry fruit, mocha, spice, touch of mineral. Medium/full bodied, ripe blueberries to the fore, but not overly rich, quite finely etched in fact, spice, fine tannins, fresh acidity, then a touch of savour on the good length finish. Interesting, enjoyable, plenty of time in hand.

dark and opaque. decanted 3hrs. smells a lot younger than i’d have expected at 16yrs. nose is very fruit fwd, sweet and spicy notes… blackberry compote, vanilla, fig, christmas cake. full bodied with lively acid, sweet dark berries, spice, pepper and oak. v enjoyable and has broad appeal but agree with earlier reviews that suggest this doesn’t speak to rioja. has a v int’l profile. personal preference but at this price point, comparable offerings by muga (prado enea) or rioja alta (res 904) may be step better.

Decanted 30 minutes. Behind all the vanilla oak is a nose of dark cherry and raspberry fruit and more savory notes - graphite, chocolate, coffee some spice and quite a lot of toasty smoke. 75 year old Tempranillo. Sweet and polished on the palate - lovely silky mouthfeel. Full of flavor. Medium plus weight - listed at 14% and I would not dispute that. It is not a blockbuster. Not at the limit of concentration. Tannins are very fine grained with a little dryness on the back end. But level of oak (18 months in new French oak) imprints itself on all aspects of this wine in ways that, for me, detracts from its identity as Rioja and thus its authenticity, which in turn by my criteria makes it not worth drinking. I might perhaps have pegged this as Tempranillo - maybe - but I would have said it was from Ribero Duero. If pressed to score this I have no idea how even to approach that task. ( Incidentally it was highly rated on release by critics I respect - Jancis Robinson and Steve Tanzer). A certain constituency will absolutely love it. Others will see it as an opportunity lost to make an authentic Rioja. A single bottle, knowingly bought on release just in case I was wrong and all that new oak would melt away and integrate after 15 years. But sadly I was right. It has not. Some of this wine wound up on the carpet, which inclined me to like it even less. Bought on release.
Monthly Tasting Group HWS; Rioja (By RW and PB): Extremely beautiful and complex, refined bouquet with licorice, mint, black olives and coffee. On the palate dark berries, sweet licorice and chocolate, soft herbs and spices, beautiful acidity and soft tannin. Very full bodied and delicious wine which is at its peak now.

I still remain partly unconvinced by this wine and, given the cost, that is a significant issue. Decanted for over two hours it still came across as a little sharp and aggressively hard on first tasting. It did open up later but I would have struggled to identify it as Rioja tasted blind. If this is the”modern style” then I remain a traditionalist
