The dim and faded ghost of what was once a lovely wine. Nothing unpleasant (not even immediately after opening), just not much there. After about 40 minutes in the glass it picks up more body, but still no meaningful complexity. Best poured at cellar temperature. Cork in excellent shape. Tasted from the Jancis Robinson glass. [A bit better after almost two hours in the glass--this is reflected in the score. Still not much complexity, but there's now a surprisingly decent aftertaste. One final note: stoppered and kept for 24 hours at cellar temperature, and after an additional hour in the glass, the wine showed some more modest improvement--still not much in the way of complexity, but it had greater richness and, overall, was slightly more enjoyable (not reflected in the score--had I chosen to adjust the score, I would have raised it to 87 points)! I am not sure what to make of this.]

3 months are a more promising note this latest bottle smelt and tasted of drains and though one does not expect a lot of charm it was rather hard work from start to finish. Certainly past its best and a bit dirty now.

Cotes du Rhone (Frank's place in Matraville): Ooh, slightly maderised initially, sweet spice, touch herbaceous, a little funky, mushroom, oxidised and, to complete the picture, a smidge of VA. Juicy, tightly tannic initially dusty textured, sour red berries, a little bitter, slight black pepper.

PNP into Zalto Burgundy glass (“Leaf” day): pale ruby to the eyes.
Garrigue and liquorice infused darker red cherry fruits. Leafy and some meaty notes.
On palate more minerality and medicinal notes. Good level of integration and persistence here.
93-94 points.
