  • This has a very simple, and pretty unsatisfying taste. The nose is warm, winey, alcohol with some fruit. There is some acid on the attack, The flavor is of cherries, a bit sour, and a little hot and musty on the finish. The body seems fairly light to this uneducated palate, and the tannins are fairly soft, but present. When I had it with some meaty cassoulet, it did not harmonize with the food. In rating it, I give it a 76 for average, though I find the ratings themselves to be challenging: isn't the average wine also "good?" If you want the entertainment value of an ordinary glass of wine, I think you'll be disappointed in this. If you just need a glass of wine at a party to lighten up this may suffice. 76 plus or minus 4.

The black box went for the equivalent of $6 a bottle, and is advertised as "premium red wine". I haven't found lot of decent competition at this price point. My wife thought it tasted okay. A friend who drinks box wines thought that this was a quality product (by reputation more than her own tasting). It would be better to taste this blind, as on the one hand, one doesn't expect much, so may the palate is fooled by low expectations, but on the other hand it has fairly effective branding that may enhance the tasting experience. My fundamental purpose was to find an inexpensive, everyday quaffer. I don't think this measures up, as it is just too simple, too lacking in personality. Compared to the 2006 BOHO Vineyards Cabernet I recently reviewed, this is a much more acceptable effort, but it is REALLY boring. So, I'm still looking.
