  • I didn’t take notes so not rating (this was a last minute sub for a birth year ‘78 Rioja I opened and found totally oxidized), but this tastes considerably younger than 20 years for a Napa cab. Tannins we’re still a little tight immediately upon opening, though they loosened up pretty quickly. Not past peak at all.

  • I am amazed at how much fruit this wine still has at age 17. This thing is loaded with ripe sweet purple fruit throughout. The heady nose is showing decent complexity with aromas of slate, cedar, creme de cassis, and creme brulee. The tannins are quite resolved which allow the fruit to just explode on the palate. This wine isn't my style but I can see how it would be attractive to people who like ripe wines. I think I will save my last bottle for another 5-10 years just to see what happens with the fruit.

  • Opened my last one of these tonight. It's rich and ripe and has that mature california kirsch liqueur thing going on. A bit of a bite at the end, but really this is a very nice wine that is drinking well right now but is probably not worth keeping much longer.

  • This is at a nice point in its life cycle. Very purple wine a secondary nose of sweet black licorice, forest floor & slightly oxidized (but nice) dark fruit. It's quite full bodied and has great fruit but feels a little out of balance with some burn and bite at the back end. I wish it ended like it finished but it just doesn't. Up front this is a 94 point wine, but the finish bites too much, bringing it down to a very respectable 90 points. I'll drink my remaining ones over the next couple of years.

  • Deep ruby purple throughout. The aromas include blueberry, currant, and brown sugar along with some high toned floral herbal tones. The palate is full bodied with good acidity and ripe firm tannins. The flavors tend towards dark purple fruit, oak, and plumy heat towards the finish. The fruit seems a little too grapey and one dimensional but the wine does seem structured enough for some complexity to emerge. Pretty solid but a little too boring to be special.
