Tasted on a warm autumn afternoon in a sunny drawing room in rural Normandy. Bright golden amber in colour, with a nose of marmalade and coffee. In the mouth it's off-dry and perfumed, with a backbone of walnuts, spiced gingerbread and Seville oranges. It's an elegant, vibrant wine, whose liveliness comes partly from the bright Madeira acidity that balances the richness of this wine, and partly from the freshness of the flavours: it’s a shock to realise that this wine was put into cask nearly 150 years ago. The finish goes on forever — I have literally never tasted a wine with a finish so persistent. Phenomenal (thank you, Hugo!).
