The 2009 Léoville Barton offers a pretty, wild strawberry nose, full of cedar pencil. Layer on layer of naturally sweet mixed berry fruit evolve in the mouth, complemented by sea air and potpourri (elements which the three Léovilles share). There are sometimes Brett problems with this wine and this example is unfortunately affected by this, growing increasingly conspicuous with time. But clean examples are fabulous.

Glass: Riedel Sommelier Bordeaux Popped and poured from half bottle. Clear, deep ruby-garnet color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose with lots of red fruit, spices and fine tobacco. Beautiful depth and density. On the palate with a beautiful high, present tanning structure and lively acidity. Fine red fruit, green pepper, salt, violets and fine tobacco. Beautiful creamy texture, dense and deep, great balance and long finish. Starts to sing, but is far away from its peak. Beautiful 94+

At first relatively muted on the nose but showing notes of blackberry, graphite, leather. The palate was large indeed with an attack of ripe primary black fruits, giving way to a midpalate dominated by minerals/ciagr box and tightly coiled tannins. Throughout the night it continued to open but was still nowhere near ready at the ~2 hour mark. This wine is classic bordeaux but also big and ripe, with huge structure to go along. Will take maybe another 5-10 years for everything here to come together but certainly a quality production in a legendary year. 93 points with 94-95 potential.

Notes of blueberry and black plum, cedar and eucalyptus; quite juicy. Very smooth tannins and low abv makes this fairly light for a Bordeaux. Would be better if it had a bit more structure.
