Interesting. For reasons that are beyond me, other than its obvious age, I was concerned that this was coming to the end of its life and I had not tried any of my 6 bottles. Decant, wait and let it breathe. The coffee / chocolate spectrum of flavours fade slightly with time and more red fruits appear. I am tempted to say, be patient and trust. I will see if I can follow my own advice but will report back….

During a 67PallMall tasting event. Dark fruit with smoky bacon and meaty aromas dominating, very rustic. On the palate this is again rather ristic, a bit like a Tannat from Madiran. The tannins are well judged though but the overall profile here is dominated by rusticity. I never had an interesting red wine made from Touriga Nactional, Tannat and Sagrantino. I think these 3 varietals are just too tannic and rustic.

Niepoort wine dinner. Has the softness of maturity with fruit intact. Highest alcohol of the 3 vintages at 13.5% abv. Interesting as a guide to the evolution of Batuta’s taste profile as it ages. My personal pecking order is still 2015>2013>2008.

Lustrous ruby in colour
A serious decant opens this up.
Cherry along with herbal aromas on the nose. Notes of mint.
Vanilla on the palate, blossoming of red fruit, particularly cherry and aredcurrant sharpness.
Generous minerality.
Backbone of lightly astringent acidity.
Excelent fruity finish.
