  • I believe this was the forerunner to what is now known as The Caley. It is only produced in exceptional year and 04 was indeed an exceptional year in the Barossa Valley. It is a uniquely Australian blend and one that works well - Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. In this case 69% and 31% respectively.

Upon opening, it was quite cabernet dominant, tannic, cassis and a hint of spice - with the shiraz not being present. A couple of hours in the decanter, the wine exhibited a great balance between the two varietals. A slightly sweet note at the tip of the tongue, the body was savoury, earthy and exhibited exceptional blackcurrant and blackberry. The tannin was soft with the a hint of vanilla. Quite a saline finish.

An excellent wine that can be enjoyed now or 5+ years.

  • This was discounted and recommended at a local wine shop. Cork was in good condition. Colour showed definite age, brownish round the edges but still dark in the middle. The nose and the palate were both disappointing, plenty of alcohol, and the overriding impression was of port. Not good value for money despite the discount. Will not buy any more.

  • This was excellent. I picked this up in a panic at Fornum's; it was on offer.

Licquorice and black olive on the nose, nicely balanced, could still go some way but why bother?

  • This is seriously classy, polished wine. The nose is all rich, warm berry fruits with a touch of spice. It has good volume and depth and has some cedar and cherry notes that come to the fore as the wine takes in some air. It is still very youthful but exquisitely balanced and persistence of flavour is admirable.

  • Sam Comes to Town (La Pentola): Brief notes. Boozy/warm nose, more balanced on the palate though with nice cassis fruit. The fruit is still too sweet and the alcohol too high for my liking, but better than the previous wines.
