  • Wine Education Service - Chile - Great Wine From Small Producers (LSE): Just opaque with a hint of age.
A nose that leaps out of the glass, but it's not blousy, just deliciously fruity.
Soft fruity attack, then the oak comes in, silky mid palate, tannic finish, quite long.

  • WES - Chile - Great Wine from Small Producers (LSE Holborn): Med/high intensity. Bright with no colour change. Dark cherry nose, rather baked. Rich, bold, rather unstructured. Cherry then vanilla. Un-gamely.

  • Quite dark for a Pinot - more of a beetroot tint rather than the more common garnet or ruby. The nose isn't overly aromatic or floral, as you'd expect from many a New World Pinot; it's more of a plum perfume with a noticeably alcoholic whiff and a touch of chocolate, like a Cabernet or a Syrah, and oak. These slightly confusing messages lead, perhaps surprisingly, to a well-integrated wine, with a rich, tannic, and remarkably chewy mouthfeel, and a finish that's complex and powerful - balancing a lot of weighty, serious fruit with earthy tones, and a muscular, punchy sensation. It's not classical Pinot Noir by any stretch of the imagination - it has reminiscences of Pinot in the nose, just about, and on the tongue, in the form of a marked acidity and a sexy savoury dimension, but in every other respect, this is a blockbuster wine, albeit one with personality and ambition. So overall, although this is an enjoyable wine in the "masculine" mold (especially with grilled meats or game), it is struggling to assert its identity, and is a kind of betrayal to traditional Pinot Noir, which, in my opinion, should be poetic, ethereal and difficult, pleasing only the very few. I had the privilege of visiting Casa Lapostolle last year, and I will say, however, that it's one of the most impressive wineries in Chile and their wines are rarely disappointing. This is not disappointing, just possibly slightly misguided. With respect to ageing, I have no doubt that this wine will last a long time, and hopefully will improve immeasurably in the future.

  • Decanter Fine Wine Encounter; 11/13/2010-11/14/2010 (Landmark Hotel, London): (Decanter Fine Wine Encounter) This wine has spent 15 months in 85% new oak. Beautiful nose of fresh red fruits with an intense palate of firm tannins, red fruits and a medium spicy aftertaste.

  • Pinot noir my arse. This is not pinot noir. This is black and massive. To put it into context, this is bigger, richer and hotter than an aussie 07 shiraz I had an hour before. I really dont get this wine - bug, stinky nose of burnch treacle, nuts, tar. The palate is chunky and crunchy and lacks any real finesse. This is like a shiraz, not pinot. If you like finesse, avoid this wine.
