Courtesy of British Airways en route NY > LHR. Freshly opened. This time was a lot more evolved, rounder and richer and performing like the top cuvée it is meant to be. We have had of course over the years many avg performances and the lack of disgorgement data does make it difficult to monitor, at least now they do release them in cuvee numbers which makes it easier. This was an old school generic ( probably BA bought all those bottles) but in this occasion was so good. Rich and balanced , aromatic, toasty , light honey. Very pretty 93-94 and maybe among the best experiences we have ever had with this wine.

By the glass at the BA lounge , LHR. freshly opened. As always a conundrum wine, a grand cuvée that always falls short but nevertheless we like it and it has the elegance we look for as well as the firm , focussed feel. Maybe it’s because it could be so much ( or it should be) that sort of always lets us down. That and the lack of disgorgement data. 92

Drank on BA flight. Very light and airy with white peach and lemon fruit, some green apple. Nicely balanced and clean. Needs a bit more depth for higher score. 92/100

A Concorde Room treat at Heathrow Terminal 5. Jammy orchard and stone fruits, toast and crushed rocks. Some reduction, but not too much. Wonderfully pure but unobtrusive acidity that dances across the palate in waves, completely in balance with the other elements of the wine. Such a benevolent and un-austere pleasure-giver of a champagne. It doesn’t have the brute power of Cristal (for example), but I prefer this style. Has to be my favourite NV - better than Krug NV for my palate.

Steak Dinner with Great Wine (Asador Bastian - Chicago IL): This is most likely Iteration 21 based on its disgorgement date, which makes it mostly from 2002 with 1999/1997 reserve and 55% Chardonnay. Elegant and coy to start, this delivers a long, more robust finish. Wonderfully fresh.
