  • Unfortunately bottle 1/3 was slightly oxidized. I double decanted and then let it rest for a couple hours, and while most of the funk went away, it was still not at its best.

Color was garnet; nose had Earthy notes, leather, mushrooms, and some tart cherries. Very tertiary. Very nice acidity still, lots of leather and some tobacco leaves on the palate with hints of red cherries that have faded in the background; medium+ tannins, oak on the ending. Even a slightly off bottle was very appealing and we ended up drinking most of it - although we also opened a great bottle of 2005 Amon-Ra since we were having Wagyu A5 and I wanted a very good wine in good condition to go with it. NR now, but I hope my two other bottles are in better state.

  • A superb bottle. As good a Brunello di Montalcino as either my wife or I can recall. On nose, raisin, tobacco, violet, rose, chocolate, a whiff of tar. On palate, smooth. Tannins very present but softened. Cherry, blackberry, coffee, cocoa, charcoal, a hint of lemon tang. Great after 1.5 hours in decanter. Better an hour later. Still has plenty of time, though hard to imagine it getting any better.

  • Drinking very well. Well blended. Ample fruit. Soft tannins.

  • Vinetasters: Sangiovese (Park Ridge, IL): Served double blind. Definitely an older wine with some modest herbal notes. Clearly aged, with some earthy and leathery tones, as well as partially dried up cherries. Pleasant, but lacking weight and definitely showing long in the tooth -- perhaps a 1997 sangiovese?

  • Beautifull deep dense complex nose first with forest floor and earth, later at times with dark cherries, truffle and licorice. Palate and specially the finish is in the beginning pretty dominated by the tannins(but still lovely fruit) but that changes after 2 hours where its lush and just magnificient. Still you feel the structure.
This is a step up from 1999 i had last year and I think this has a long life ahead of it.
I have had a lot of 2015-16 brunellos that are really classy and felt like trying a more mature Brunello. This is certainly different and more complex, but if its worth waiting 20 years is the question.
