Really solid for a village, and 04. Was in a great spot where the tough as nails Gouges elements have really softened up, opened up nicely in the glass though, very enjoyable.

It's interesting reading the earlier notes on this wine - the greenness and horsey nature, in particular. I am finding little of either in this bottle, now at nearly 20 years. It is certainly not an overripe fruit bomb, but it is a very elegant, mineral driven, somewhat earthy, well structured NSG drinking near peak for this palate. There is a rusticity to the nose especially - for me, more of a mushroomy, earthy note - along wtih intense black cherry. Some forest floor and leather too. And a just a hint of baking spice - the oak talking? Palate has a strong structure of acid, mineral, and some tannins still. This supports ample dark cherry fruit, and again, an earthy mushroom note. a bit of leather, and tobacco. chocolate. The rustic elegance (is that an oxymoron?) is quite appealing. Stellar with morel mushrooms.

Aroma a cinzas, a queimado, queijo defumado, nota de baunilha. Sabor de queimado, adstringente, mineral. Não é um vinho agradável, nem muito fácil de entender.

Surprise, the other tasters didn't fancy this wine that much. The dense, tannin-rich, stringent, rustic style of Gouges was not a crowd-pleaser. However, I liked the nice austere fruit combined with firm mouth-grip. Overwhelmed the pata negra a bit - but with a chorizo it was shining. Even from a modest vintage, Gouges delivers solid quality in this NSG Village wine.
