I'm a fan of Montes (even their bottom of the line) so I was surprised I didn't like this Alpha much. Bad storage before I bought it (the store I bought from doesn't have a great reputation)? Was this 2007 past its prime? These Alphas are usually oaked 1 year in french oak but I couldn't taste much of it. Fruit on the nose or mouth? Barely any. Yep, but did get some vegetal aromas.
Brought it to a wonderful dinner with friends. Luckily the meal was 10x better than the wine - duck magret for the main course!
If you want some middle of the line Chilean red, I highly recommend Casa Lapostolle Cuvee Alexandre. Wow, great oak and fruit for a price just a tad more than the Montes Alpha. Luckily I gifted that one to my in-laws and they were very happy with it.
I'll give Montes another shot but this was a disappointment.

Luving the big nose of sweet blackberry compote and the nice mocha/ chocolate covered red raspberries with just a hint of licorice. Definitely a great QPR wine if you can find it on the secondary market under $14.

A good fleshy, VERY open merlot, that grabs you with a unctuous nose of chocolate blueberries and moves right into a deftly balanced throw of expresso amd red velvet cake with tangy cherry undertones. Good velvety tannins and considerably long finish on the follow-through.

Nose of mocha, chocolate, cherries and blueberries. A bit out of balance and disjointed on the palate. Overall think this juice needs food.
