  • This wonderful bargain, a blend of 45% Tinta Roriz, 30% Tourica Franca and 25% Tourica National grapes, from the Douro region of Portugal and Fifth Empire Wines has a deep, dark, crimson purple color and a beautiful nose of blackberry, black currant, raisin, cherry, oak, tobacco and lavender. The legs are slow and there was moderate sediment in the bottle. When first opened, the 14% alcohol and high levels of tannin were noticeable and required about 45 minutes of decanting. When drunk, the tannin moderated substantially and the wine mellowed out to an extremely pleasant drink with hints of strawberry, blackberry, black currant, raisin, cherry, oak, and tobacco. It is a full bodied wine with a rich, round texture and a medium finish and acidity. A 2015 vintage, this wine is just now beginning to come into its own.

  • would be delic with steak. Had w/Zataar roasted chicken, bit too big for it (also had a German pinot meunier which was a nice match)

  • Week 12 - WSET Diploma REVISION (Pam's Place): Tasted Open

A: Medium ruby (can still see the stem)
N: Pronounced intensity of sugarplum, black cherry, bramble, dried herb, woodsmoke, vanilla, baking spice, sweet tobacco, leather, ( E got red fruit and florals)
P: Dry, medium (+) acid, medium (+) tannin ripe, medium (+) intensity and medium (+) finish, medium alcohol (14%)
C: The the acid, tannin and concentration are in balance. It is not too jammy owing to the acid structure. The length and intensity are very apparent whilst the complexity is increasing in this wine but with less than five clusters I would not call the wine complex in its current guise. The wine is very good quality.
It is suitable for ageing with tertiaries already showing the promise of how the primary and secondary flavours may increase the wines complexity on ageing.

Personally, it feels like a cross between a Rioja and a Syrah, ha!
VA on palate and slight bitter stalk finish
