Powerful and masculine barolo. The tannins are nicely integrated but still very noticeable for a 23 year old wine. Some black fruits but mostly secondary flavors of tar, licorice, and some leather. Some have noted they think this should be drunk now but I disagree. There is still immense structure here and I think this wine can go another 10-20 years easily and it will be fascinating to see it evolve. Needs at least a few hour decant.

Nose: Intense nose with mature notes of cigar box, tobacco, smoky, caramel, cinnamon. Very nice black fruit can be detected: Cassis, blackberries and a scent reminding of iodine and blood oranges. The freshness and yet the depth and precision is overwhelming. The combination of Italy's warmth with the freshness of Nebbiolo is wonderful.
Palate: high alcohol, high acidity, medium tannins that are very well integrated. Medium body and the balance is outstanding. One could wish for a little more fruit in the mouth, otherwise ready and compared to Aldo Conterno Cicala 2001 / 2010 this Colonnello 2000 seems more masculine and a little less fruit driven. For this reason we prefer Cicala.
Still has some ageing potential, a good 5 years +.

Barolo at RPM Steak (RPM Steak - Chicago, IL): Tough placement next to the Granbussia, but this is good in its own right. Sweet primary mulled strawberries with mint, herbs and cream. Round and fleshy. Structure is nicely integrated. Seems to be at peak.

A bit murky and oaky/blurry upon decanting, seemingly on its way downhill. Much better an hour or two later, with brighter aromas of raspberry vinegar, cherry coke, tarry wood, dusty earth, dried fruits and dried roses. Medium-bodied with highish acidity (slightly volatile), soft tannins and a medium, leathery, not-so-exciting finish. As several times before with Aldo Conterno's wines, one would have guessed it was raised in barrique. A fitting food companion to deer fillet and mushroom risotto, nonetheless. Drink upp, here's nothing to be gained by further cellaring.

Tasted blind. Nose was at first quite ripe, almost cooked, but dissipated with air. Dark fruit profile, but elegant with fine acidity and tannins. Very good.
