Drank with a friend at a local restaurant with a wonderful steak dinner. I began to wonder when the waiter had an issue with the cork, not sure it it was "user error" or a real cork problem, but the portion of the cork he was able to remove looked and felt fine with no issues. The cork issue resulted in a filter and decant that may have been happy accident which helped this wine to open up (I'm a fan of PNP Cabs). The pour into the decanter showed a beautiful dark red color that you might expect from a much younger Cabernet. As this 2001 was considered past its drinking window it still drank well. The nose in the glass was rather musty and tight, but as the evening progressed each sip provided a little more glimpse into what this wine could be (or was it was in its prime). After about an hour in the decant the wine still showed some acidity and tannins even after being five years past the anticipated drinking window. The wine showed with initial short fruit flavor of dark berries and then the tannins and acidity would come in and end with a rather short finish. Overall it was a very good wine but for the price I paid I was expecting more. Maybe with a longer decant it may have been able to show more, and it leaves me wondering what this wine was like at its peak. I'd buy it again but maybe a lower price point and a longer decant.

Decanted 30 minutes - surprising little to no sediment. Color was almost bricklike on the edges, dark ruby in the center. Tannins obviously settled, lacking. Semi-dry with dark fruit and cocoa powder, lingering finish. Definitely reached it's peak, but still has life left.

This bottle was not as deep and rich as previous Jarvis Cabs I've tried. PnP from 750ml, cork was a bit suspect - overly crystalline end. Wondered if there was a touch of VA, as this was just a bit off, with a touch of funk on the nose and palate (not at all typical of this wine). That said, after about an hour, it blew off and showed a nice, mellow, right bank Bdx style. Night two it was fine/similar - even a bit softer. Enjoyable if unremarkable.

This was part of a half-bottle vertical tasting between the 1999, 2000, and 2001 Cabs. All were truly outstanding - and the half-bottle format did nothing to shorten the life cycle for these great wines.

This wine is drinking fabulously. Plenty of rich fruit with a full mouth feel and very fine finish.
