SA Wimps 2023; 5/27/2023-5/28/2023 (La Trompette): Wonderful nose, really sucks you in, but the palate was just a little bit muddled. This is a boozy wine and not light enough on its feet to carry it. I was surprised to realise that I had drunk the same vintage a little while ago, and found it wonderful - context is important and I can imagine the poise and precision of the preceding whites had not set me up to enjoy this, but i rather suspect that bottle variation is at play.

South Africa WIMPS #165 26th May 2023 (La Trompette, Chiswick): An intriguing mix of crunchy polenta savouriness and some cherry liqueur sweetness on the nose here. The 14.5% alcohol is noticeable here. It is rich and multi-layered on the nose but, for me, the palate cannot quite deliver on this promise; it’s a little shorter than one would hope and a little boozy.

Zinchester: Had no idea of what to expect from this. On the nose, earthy, with a hint of electricity - damp ground before a thunderstorm . On the palate - a punch in the mouth - there’s a depth and complexity there. My handwritten note says “a portal” - a portal to what I don’t know but it seems right. Violets in an iron glove. This was a serious wine, the kind you’d not want to drink too much of - not because it’s too boozy, or tannic, but just because there’s so much much to it. A real treat.

Beautiful wine at its peak, rich red fruit, a hint of chocolate, long warm finish.

The two previous notes describe the experience associated with drinking this wine better than I would ever do.
This is really of those of wines that put a smile on your face and make you think "that's why we drink wine".
In a excellent phase now and am not sure it can improve much.
