  • An odd bottle that I think may have been corked.

  • Gruner Veltliner Tasting (7 wines) (New Buffalo, Michigan): My last bottle of this wine. Opened it over the weekend as part of a GruVe tasting. I do not think that this estate makes wine from the Schreiberberg vineyard anymore. 1997 was supposedly a fantastic vintage in Austria. I bought a few years ago for $15 per bottle. This wine has been hit or miss over the years and this one was a miss for me. The cork crumbled and as a result we splash decanted the wine to remove excess cork. Medium yellow color. Jamek makes wines in a hedonistic/lush style. The nose was very nice with tropical nuances. Primarily pineapple at first but then some mustiness appeared. This had lower acidity and came off as flat with low fruit. This bottle was over the hill. Still drinkable. 82 points

  • 2nd or 3rd time I have had this wine. This was the best bottle yet. I took this to another Haggis happy hour yesterday. I got this in a discount bin for $15 a few years ago. Cork was a little stubborn. We splash decanted this immediatly upon opening. The wine continued to open up and evolve as it sat in the decanter over the course of about 3 hours. Haggis mentioned that it was a masculine wine and I agree. Amber yellow color on this 9 year old GruVe. It had solid acidity notes of asian pear and white pepper. 90 points.

  • This wine was showing its age and I would guess that it has put on considerable weight since it was released. It was heavier than the 1999 Hirtzberger GruVe Axpoint or the 2001 Nigl GruVe Freiheit which I've had within the last year. It was a yellowish/emerald color. It had a good mineral and wet stone background with notes of pear and honey. Unfortunately, I thought the wine showed too much oak and buttery nuances (R2-D2 noticed this first). Full bodied. 86 points.
