  Tone’s 75th Birthday Bash: served blind by the birthday boy himself. He taunted me by revealing that after I’d treated him to a couple great bottles of this a few years back, he’d picked some up at auction. That was supposed to help me identify this wine. Knee deep in great wines this night, couldn’t do it. Very consistent with other notes though (including Xavier 94’s on same bottle).

  Picture perfect Burgundy with sous bois complexity, bacon fat, smoke and leather scents with classic beetroot and beef stew aromas and flavors. Fresh acidity to the medium bodied flavors should continue to make this age in an effortless fashion for many years to come. Very complete wine that ticks all the boxes right now. For many this would show a perfect drinking window right now, however.

  Gorgeous autumnal nose, peppery, loads of fruit still; classic nose and palate of aged Burgundy with shoe polish, beetroot, clove and celery salt; very rich cherry and damson plum aftertaste carried along nicely by ample acidity. 93+

  Quite similar but more like a softer version of the Ponnelle '78 Charmes Chambertin tasted alongside it; slightly more shy on the nose, autumnal aged fruit, tertiary with iron and beetroot, classy. Firm acid shows through as it doesn't have the fullness and richness of the Charmes. Still quite good.
