  • Bright cherry red with slight fading at the edges. Slight, plummy nose. Soft, bright fruit on the palate, plums, blueberries. Just the slightest bit of heat. Nice acidity, good balance. Nicely resolved tannins. Finishes moderately long, soft and red fruited. Still quite nice, but I'd drink up.

  • Very different from the previous bottle. There was nothing about this, outside of maybe the tannin integration, that would make you think that this is a 9 year old syrah and I even double checked that I didn't grab the wrong bottle. The palate is dominated by primary fruit, that is rich in blackberry, but also has a big red raspberry element which, if I had this blind, would lead me to think that this had some amount of grenache in it. There are some secondary notes of cedar, cloves and a bit of chocolate, but there is a noticeable absence of the smoky, meaty, peppery, tertiary notes that added complexity and made other bottles so good. Not a bad bottle, but it just failed to live up to expectations. This seemed a bit too refined and lacking in a wild character.

There was a little bit left under vacu-seal in the fridge and this was actually much better after two days. The expected smoky, meaty, peppery syrah notes were all there, leading me to think that this could have used healthy decanting.

  • Showing a little bit of age, with a deep ruby core that fades to garnet at the rim. Alcohol peeks out a bit on the nose, but outside of that you get blackberries, violets, smoke, cured meats, pepper and vanilla & cedar notes from the oak. With more air, the meatier notes come to the fore. The palate is very much in line with the nose, with deeply concentrated black fruits, dark chocolate, beef jerky, integrated oak and a little hint of alcohol. The tannins are still very much there, but there is more than enough concentration of flavor and acidity to act as a counter balance and while it is fine to drink now, this could age for at least 5-10 years. Unmistakably Californian and "modern", but very delicious, provided you like a very bold style.

  • Bottle 4 of 8 purchased 4/2011. Opened and poured. Bright and spicy nose exactly what you'd expect. The taste follows what the nose tells you without any noticeable heat that you sometimes find in CA syrahs. Tannin is not overt and has integrated nicely over the years. Nicely balanced and drinking beautifully now. I don't think it will makes Parker's 2027 drinking window but I see no reason why it won't continue to impress for many years to come.

  • Open and decanted. Drank over several days. Dark fruit aromas. Little hot with dark cherry flavors. Smooth with long finish. A great Syrah. Wish I had more in my cellar.
