Community Tasting Notes (3) Avg Score: 87.9 points

  • Decanted 1 hr. ahead. Deep ruby-garnet color with a bit of orange. Nice and spicy nose, with black pepper, allspice, cherries, blueberries. Brisk on the palate, with medium body and firm acidity. Coffee and tobacco flavors join the mix. Finishes with a bit of tar and metallic notes over light tannins. The aromas lead you to think the wine will be light and spicy, but the flavors and finish take things in darker & richer direction.

  • Decanted 1 hr. ahead. Deep garnet color. Nice and dusky nose of white pepper, hard spices, plums, graphite, a bit of smoke. Bright on the palate, with black cherry and tobacco flavors in a medium-to-full bodied package with good acidity. Finishes nicely with licorice notes ahead of a light grip with light tannins. This wine occasions deeper thoughts about "varietal specificity," which some tasters use a a benchmark but is not going to be valid here. It was vinified ambitiously, given the nice nose, good acids, and well-tailored tannins. The issue with this wine lies in whether you want to know what you are drinking, because this particular cuvée is showing a lot of tendencies with little clear direction. I think this is a case of a good winemaker confronting a less-than-ideal batch of juice. He did great work, and the results are for sure interesting to drink. By the standards of the 100-point scale, which I reluctantly use here, it's Very Good. But if you want to discuss wine with other tasters, this is a great bottle. Did I mention that it was $20, a wonderful QPR for such an experience.
