  • Leaf Day - fill to bottom of neck. Cork sound with little ingress. Double decanted off a small amount of sediment. Opaque dark garnet core extending to almost the edge with a very thin browning rim. Nose (in a Riedel Pinot Noir glass) is damp loam, old leather, mushroom, dried red flowers, potpourri and dark fruit. The palate is supple with still some ripe and resolved tannins and medium acidity. The flavours are rich and warming with spice, ripe black fruit, mushroom, supple leather and plum leaning but not yet to prune richness. The finish is long with the spice, black fruit, plum/prune and leather continuing. A mature bottle of wine still showing beautifully.

  • Fruit Day - Cork sound with ingress only about a 1/3 of the way. Decanted off a very small amount of sediment which was mostly stuck to the side of the bottle. Funky and earthy with a touch of vinegar on the pop and pour. Somewhat disturbing. But after a 1/2 hour in the decanter it just plain blossomed! All notes after the 1/2 hour - Garnet in the glass with a crimson edge. Nose is ripe dark fruit with spice and damp earth with a little cigar box thrown in. On the palate it’s rich, smooth and the flavours are ripe dark fruit with tobacco, leather, spice and smoke. It’s absolutely delicious and went perfectly with Maui Ribs. Eminently drinkable now but if you wish could probably hold for another couple of years in a good cellar.

  • a blend of Primitivo and Negroamaro from Italy and showed some real spunk with its spiced prune/plum, and peppery finish along with slightly woody notes. It came across as rustic yet had a tastiness about it and a pleasant lingering finish - not at all what I expected when I opened the bottle, but definitely a pleasant surprise.

  • After a weekend of drinking beer spent with my in-laws I was glad to see a bottle of wine waiting for me upon my return home. This is a wine I had taken out a few days previously but never got around to drinking - a 50 / 50 blend of Primitivo and Negroamaro aged 12 months in barrel then an additional 12 months in bottle (or that is what I understood from the back label and my rusty almost non-existent Italian). At first it smelled kinda hot, looking at the alcohol content I am not surprised as 14.5% jumped right at me, it also tasted rather warm but there was a spice on the front palate amongst the heat that told me that a little time was needed for it to come around. Dried plum, spiced -raspberry, licorice, all-spice and black pepper were all found on the nose; while white pepper, licorice and dried red fruit dominated the palate. The wine smoothed out after 45 minutes and was supple and easy to drink, but still with dried fruit, spice and pepper ... around the hour mark it developed a hint of bitter cocoa on the finish. Nice wine for its age.
