Community Tasting Notes (1) Avg Score: 86 points

  • This is why we so much like big Spanish reds with a little bottle age. Still inky black color. The nose is slightly funky, showing more non fruit, than fruit characteristics. Pretty close to full bodied. Must have been terribly tannic upon release, while still flexing their muscles at age 5. We rarely get wines this full bodied. There is a sharpness from alcohol. Spicy. There is a pretty big blackberry fruit trying to escape from a graphite, tannic earthiness. Probably not much influence from new oak, but there is a small amount of vanilla. The second hour in the decanter, with heavy swirling, is starting to transform this wine's characteristics to more identifiable flavors like black licorice, tobacco, and road tar. At first, I thought this bottle may have been sitting upright at a retailers for too long. As it evolves over the evening, things smooth out, but I still think proper cellaring would have increased the score one or two points.
