Upon opening, green pepper on the nose was slightly overwhelming. Once the wine had been open 2+ hours, there was a more subtle nose of black pepper, chives. a little bolognese-y. The palate is fascinating. the green pepper and black pepper are both still present, but there is a certain sweetness... almost reminiscent of the dregs of a mug of hot cider with strong mulling spices (such as anise, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, etc). This was a very interesting wine, but not particularly to my taste.

Terroir-istes International - Cabernet Franc from around the World (Rodwell House): Light to mid garnet with a wide orange rim, the intial aromas are musty, rubbery, and some feral elements. Some ripe raspberry and a touch of violet joins but there is a distinct savoury, meaty slant - old world? A juicy entry with more raspberry coulis, dust blackcurrant leaf, rosewater, and capsicum suggests the Loire or a cool new world site. The finish has a nut and herb note and an increasing bretty character. Slightly lean with a medium finish.

Holiday Tasting in Constantia and Hemel-en-Aarde, South Africa; 12/18/2010-12/28/2010 (Western Cape, South Africa): It's always a bit odd to see a single-varietal Cab Franc, but I'm game to give it a go, and the HPF Swartskaap was certainly worthwhile, though there's a lot I'd rather drink at the price (150 rand, or approximately $22). Black pepper and spicy on the nose. The green pepper I expected and didn't sniff on the nose, was present though in the mouth, as were continuing notes of black pepper. Maybe a bit of spice, like clove or anise, as well in the mouth. Nice tannins, and I think this would stand up to steak in a way that the HPF Die Arnoldus '06 we tasted probably wouldn't. All in all, a nice CF, but the price was a bit much for me.
